Traditional chiefs sue for peace, unity during FCT elections

The traditional rulers are preaching peace ahead of the February 12 elections of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Council of Non-indigene Chiefs in Bwari Area Council of the FCT has urged the leadership of the area council to maintain peace and unity among residents of the area during the elections.

Johnathan Igwe, who spoke on behalf of the chiefs, made the call at a meeting with the Chairman, Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya and some members of his administration in Bwari, on Monday in Abuja.

Mr Igwe said that with the FCT elections underway in February, it was necessary for government at all levels to ensure a peaceful conduct.

He, however, encouraged the chairman of the council to continue the good works he had begun, while describing him as a selfless being.

“Gabaya is a great leader; a selfless human being who has worked so much to promote progress, peace and unity among all ethnic and religious bodies within this council and we do not take that for granted.

“We want this to continue because, that is the only way to make progress and develop further.

“If you understand the value of peace, unity and progress and also carry everyone along, it means you are a good leader. We hope this is maintained,” Mr Igwe said.

The chairman of the council, who also appreciated the chiefs for the gesture, also thanked them for their contributions and support towards the progress of the district.

Mr Gabaya said that it was leaders like the council of chiefs that helped maintained the togetherness among the diverse residents.

“Creating synergy to ensure a peaceful co-existence among different tribes to avoid crisis, division and disunity was the rationale behind gathering you all in this council in the first place.

“We can only do it together; once we work together, we progress together, outside that, there’s no progress. We appreciate you and are proud to have your support always,” he said.

Mr Gabaya, who is contesting for re-election as chairman of the council on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), urged the chiefs to ensure they sensitise there followers on the need to come out to vote on February 12.
