Two policemen were injured in a fresh attack on Mbieri Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo state.

The attack which occurred on Wednesday night came barely 24 hours after some gunmen attacked the Area Divisional Police Headquarters at Ehime Mbano Local Government Area.

Unknown gunmen had, two days ago, set alight a correctional facility and police investigations department in Owerri, freeing about 2000 inmates.

Witness accounts on social media said the unknown gunmen released suspects from the Mbieri police cell during the overnight attack on the police division.

“Police divisional Hq in Mbieri, Mbaitoli LGA of Imo state was attacked overnight, all suspects released from the cell by unknown gunmen,” Adedeji Adesogan wrote on Facebook.

Confirming the development, Imo police spokesman Godson Orlando told Peoples Gazette that the attackers were repelled, adding that two policemen were injured in the process.

“Mbieri divisional police headquarters was attacked at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, but successfully repelled, two officers were injured and are presently receiving treatment,” Mr Orlando said.

The recurring pattern of attacks on Imo correctional centre and police divisions raises concern on the safety of citizens who may inadvertently encounter the wanted criminals, freed during the attack.

The incessant attacks further question the capacity of the security forces to protect indigenes of Imo state from the rising insurgency.

Recall that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo while addressing journalists at the Owerri Custodial Centre, Imo, after inspecting the facility to ascertain the extent of damage, condemned the attacks on the prison and police headquarters in Owerri, adding that the federal government would rejig its security architecture.

He further assured that all those responsible for the attacks would be uncovered and made to face the full wrath of the law.

In a bid to apprehend fleeing inmates of the correctional centre, the federal government on Wednesday disclosed that it is preparing to publish names and photos of fleeing Owerri prison inmates in a frantic effort to recapture them.
