The United States government has teamed up with religious leaders in Nigeria to launch an anti-corruption website, ReportMagoMago.com.

Magomago is a vernacular slang for fraud or corruption.

Launching the website in Ikoyi on Friday, the U.S. Consulate General, Claire Pierangelo, noted that eliminating corruption was a security priority of the Joe Biden-led administration.

“The U.S. government is committed to supporting anti-corruption initiatives and collaborative efforts that prevent graft, strengthen investigation and prosecution of corruption, promote accountability and transparency, and empower reformers.” said the U.S. Consulate General.

Miss Pierangelo further explained that the website “leverages citizen engagement to fight corruption,” adding that the website would empower citizens to share their experiences of corruption and spark a new movement in citizen engagement.

In fighting the scourge that has hampered development and stifled Nigeria’s prosperity, she noted that the Consulate collaborated with Inter-Religious Coalition Against Corruption in Nigeria (ICACN) to birth the anti-corruption platform.

“Led by Bishop Emmanuel Gospel Isong and Imam Shefiu Abdulkareem Majemu, the Inter-Religious Coalition Against Corruption in Nigeria was formed in 2016 by Muslim and Christian religious leaders with the primary goal of addressing how faith communities could take a leading role in anti-corruption advocacy in Nigeria,” she said.

The Consulate General concluded her briefing by reiterating the U.S. government’s commitment to holding corrupt leaders to account through “robust diplomatic engagement, by supporting multi-stakeholder initiatives and civil society, through foreign assistance to build stronger partners and transparent, trustworthy institutions.”
