Emeka Chinedu, member of the House of Representatives representing Ahiazu-Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal Constituency of Imo State, has described as unacceptable the current unemployment rate under President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime.

“The current 33.3 percent unemployment rate as well the 28 percent youth unemployment rate amounting to over 11 million unemployed youths is unacceptable,” Mr Chinedu said in a motion at the House during plenary on Wednesday.

The country’s unemployment rate jumped to 33.3 percent in the last quarter of 2020, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

This, he identified as the root cause of social vices being experienced in the country.

Mr Chinedu urged the Federal Government to strive towards creating more industries in the country to cater for teeming unemployed youths.

“This calls for a comprehensive industrial revolution and intervention in the history of the nation, given the recent developments in the political, social, and economic spheres of the country.

“Youths remain important stakeholders in the Nigerian project. The predominance of industrial clusters in South East Asian countries motivated industrial growth in the form of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“It helped in the massive decline in the unemployment rate, making way for stability in the economy, political leadership and lower crime rate as a result of remarkable success in industrialisation,’’ he said.

Mr Chinedu said that creating industries in the 360 Federal Constituencies across the country would ensure federal presence at the grassroots.

The House thereafter, mandated its Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity to develop a comprehensive industrial revolution template featuring both economic and social impact projections.

The House also mandated its Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure implementation.
