Progressive groups are criticizing the Independent Oil Price Review Committee for limiting itself to ‘surface data’ and refusing to delve deeper into the supply contracts and inventories of oil companies; for starting from the assumption that the Oil Deregulation Law is for the people’s benefit; and for relying on data ‘voluntarily supplied’ by oil companies.

Progressive organizations, business and transport leaders are dismayed at the fact that the government, up to now, has no system to monitor or explain how the oil companies profit and how much. Neither does it have a benchmark for defining excessive profits and penalties for such.

While progressive groups welcome the review, they worry about the independence of the committee, the quality of, and its hesitation to share, the data it would be getting, and the limits that it imposes on itself.
