After more than 5 years, the innocence of these persons was declared.

19 people who were arrested in connection with the Tartar case and sentenced to 7 to 20 years in prison on treason and other serious charges were acquitted and released after more than 5 years.

This was reported to Meydan TV by the press service of the General Prosecutor’s Office on December 6. All 19 people were released. At the same time, all of them were acquitted on charges of treason. Overall, 10 of the 19 people released were fully acquitted, and the criminal case against 9 people was terminated on non-exculpatory grounds against military service.

In addition, new decisions were made regarding Mehman Huseynov and Elkhan Agazadeh, who were killed under torture during interrogations. The investigation came to the conclusion that their guilt was not proven and the criminal case against them should be terminated on exculpatory grounds.

The Ministry of Defense’s investigation into the torture of military personnel in the direction of Aghdam, Tartar, and Beylagan continues.

After the proceedings on the Tartar case were renewed in December 2021, on the basis of the letter of the Prosecutor General, on September 30, the Plenum of the Supreme Court annulled the appeal and the Supreme Court’s decisions on 19 people who were sentenced to long-term imprisonment for treason and other serious charges.

The Plenum of the Supreme Court decided that the cases of these persons should be re-examined by the Ganja Appellate Court.

The cases of the mentioned 19 people were sent to the appeal instance in three groups. Their case was heard in the Ganja Appellate Court and the indictment of all of them by the Tartar Military Court was annulled. The case was sent to Ganja Military Court for re-examination. This court also returned their cases for investigation. The investigation concluded that they were innocent and released them.

After the proceedings on this case were renewed, more than 12 people, including generals and colonels, were arrested on charges of torture in the Tartar case.

The victims demand the punishment of the main former corps commander, General Hikmat Hasanov, Military Prosecutor Khanlar Valiyev, his deputy Shafahat Imranov and other persons.

The Tartar Case took place in May 2017, when the Prosecutor General’s Office, the State Security Service, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the detention of a group of servicemen and civilians on charges of spying for the Armenian special services.

They were convicted of treason and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. However, an investigation soon revealed that at least eight suspects had died as a result of torture. With that, some victims started to speak up about the case, also alleging torture practiced by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

It is known so far that 200 people were convicted of treason in these circumstances, including teenagers. Of those, some are still under arrest.
