It is crucial to consider the width and shape of the edging units when you are putting concrete. For residential footpaths the minimum width of the haunching concrete should not exceed 75mm. While driveways and highways will require concrete to be between 100mm - 150mm thick, it should not exceed 150mm. The concrete should be compacted before it sets to prevent cracking. Smoothen the concrete to a depth between 25 and 50mm below the top edge of the edging units after it has been placed.

Most modern ranges measure 780mm long. All kerbs are marked with a 'watermark,' which is a line drawn on the surface above which surfacing should not be allowed to extend. Typically, the watermark extends 25mm to 25mm above the surface of the kerb.
