More than 10,000 participants are expected to file out for the first-ever Abuja International Marathon when the race gets underway at the City Gate on Saturday, the organisers have said.

On Friday, race director Olukayode Thomas said 32 foreign athletes were already on the ground to fight for spoils too.

“These athletes are coming from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Bahrain.

“In addition to these, more than 100 Nigerian elite athletes are also set to give a good account of themselves in the race which begins at 6 a.m.,” he added.

Mr Thomas said the mouth-watering offer of $50,000 for the top finishers in the men’s and women’s categories respectively would ensure the race was keenly contested.
