A human rights advocacy group, Avocats Sans Frontieres France, also known as Lawyers Without Borders, says it handled 150 cases of torture in Enugu.

The ProCAT case law manager, Edugie Amihere, disclosed this during an advocacy visit to Enugu’s commissioner for justice, Kingsley Udeh, in Enugu on Thursday.

Ms Amihere said the cases were sponsored by the United Nations (UN) voluntary fund for victims of torture. She stated that the project started in Nigeria in 2009, adding that it was against torture and inhuman treatment.

According to her, the project started in Enugu in 2014 and is ongoing in Lagos, Imo, Kaduna and Ogun.

Ms Amihere said that during the project, the group had organised online training for lawyers, security agents, and journalists on acts constituting human rights violations and how to report and protect the victims.

She enumerated the challenges currently facing the group, including the timely issuance of nolle, the lack of medical officers, and the need to divide lawyers into two categories – those to write legal opinions and those that should go to courts.

Responding, the attorney-general assured the group of his continued support and collaboration.

Mr Udeh asked the group to put together its action plan and what to do to ensure speedy service delivery in Enugu.
