At least 157 people have died in landslides in south-western Ethiopia.

Dozens of people are still missing, a spokesman for the civil protection authority said on Tuesday.

“We are still collecting bodies, and the number of casualties is expected to be much higher,’’ the spokesman said.

When hundreds of people gathered on Monday to rescue the victims of the disaster, another landslide reportedly occurred.

Due to the heavy rainfall, another rescue operation was initially not possible.

With the start of the rainy season, landslides were not uncommon in the hilly region.

The area was first hit by mudslides on Sunday.
