The police on Wednesday arraigned a 20-year-old man, Bello Umaru, before a magistrates’ court in Ado Ekiti for alleged theft.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Elijah Adejare, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 6 at about 3:00 a.m. at No. 49, Ajilosun Street in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Mr Adejare alleged that the defendant stole an electric refrigerator valued at N70,000, one roll of cable wire valued at N60,000, two cooking pots valued at N10,000, and one bundle of iron roofing sheets valued at N24,000.

The prosecutor said the stolen items valued at N164,000 belonged to one Babatunde Tosin.

He said the offence contravened section 302 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Funmilayo Akinwunmi, urged the court to grant her client bail with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The magistrate, Olatomiwa Daramola, granted the defendant N100,000 bail with one surety.

He adjourned the case till September 26 for a hearing.
