The Zamfara Anti-thuggery Committee says the legislature established it to fight political thuggery, drug abuse and violent crimes among youths.

The committee chairman, Bello Bakyasuwa, stated this during an interaction with the Council of Ulama at the Government House, Gusau, on Wednesday.

Mr Bakyasuwa said the committee was doing its assignment as mandated by the law that established it.

It dispelled the insinuations that it was set up by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to fight the opposition parties.

According to him, the anti-thuggery committee, as the name suggests, was established by the legislature to free the state from political thuggery and drug abuse among the youths.

He said the committee was mandated to clear thuggery and drug abuse among the youth and return the state to peace and stability.

The chairman appealed to the Ulama council to support the committee with prayers and sensitize the ummah on efforts to fight against thuggery and drug abuse among the youth.

He said the committee would recruit youths from each of the 14 local government areas to engage in the same fight in their respective areas.

The committee chairman urged the council to engage Imams and Islamic scholars in preaching peace to rid the crisis-ridden Zamfara of violent crimes.
