The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) says 39 deaths, 361 injuries and 32 cases of enforced disappearances have been recorded since anti-Finance Bill protests broke out in the country on June 18.

“Data from our records indicates that thirty-nine (39) people have died and three hundred and sixty-one (361) injured in relation to the protests countrywide,” the Commission said in a statement signed by its chairman, Roseline Odede, on Monday.

A breakdown of deaths recorded across Kenyan cities and towns during the protests according to the statement are: “Nairobi (17), Nakuru (3), Laikipia (1), Narok (1), Kajiado (3), Uasin Gishu (4), Kakamega (1), Kisumu (2), Kisii (1), Mombasa (3), Siaya (1), Kiambu (1) and Nandi (1).”

It added that since the protests started “peacefully” two weeks ago, “there have been thirty-two (32) cases of enforced or involuntary disappearances and six hundred and twenty-seven (627) instances of arrests of protestors.”

The Commission’s report on death toll, injuries and enforced disappearances linked to anti-Finance Bill protests contradicts President William Ruto’s claim that only 19 deaths were recorded during the protests.

On Sunday night, Mr Ruto said there is no blood on his hands but lauded Kenyan police for quelling the protests.

For two weeks, protests have rocked Kenya as citizens vehemently rejected the controversial Finance Bill despite proposing tax imposition on cars, phones, bread, sanitary pads and other commodities despite suffering brutal attacks from police.
