The African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) has postponed its annual conference following the nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU).

This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the national president, Nnamdi Ekeanyanwu and the secretary, Ezekiel Asemah, released on Tuesday in Uyo.

The conference with the theme “Communicating Science, Technology, and Innovation in Times of Economic Distress, Terror, and a Global Pandemic” was initially scheduled to hold between October 25 and 28.

The ACCE said it was regrettable that the protracted ASUU strike had shut down the country’s public universities since February.

“This has brought untold economic and psychological hardships upon the majority of our members and potential participants.

“The new dates for the conference will be announced in due course. The programme schedules subsist,” ACCE said in the statement.

The council also announced that the submission of abstracts for the conference would continue pending the suspension of the strike.

It said by the postponement, ACCE had publicly declared its support for ASUU’s struggle to rescue the public university system from collapse.

“We condemn the way in which the public university system is being managed by the Federal Government.

“Quality education plays a huge role in the development of any country. The earlier we realise this, the better for the country,” the council stated.
