The Lagos chapter of the Allied Peoples Movement on Monday re-elected Bunmi Adeyemo and 16 others as members of the state executive committee.

The party executives emerged through consensus during the state congress held in the Yaba area of Lagos, with delegates and party supporters in attendance.

The congress also attracted scores of leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party who formed an alliance with leaders of the APM ahead of 2027.

The chairman of the congress committee, Godwin Williamson, commended the peaceful conduct of delegates and party leaders during the exercise. Mr Williamson said the party officials were returned through consensus to strengthen unity and stability within the party in the state.

Gabriel Iwatamaye was elected as deputy chairman while Abiodun Abari was elected as the secretary, Halimat Abdulrafiu (assistant secretary), Akeem Kolapo (organising secretary), Ayodele Kazeem (publicity secretary), Tajudeen Alatishe (treasurer), Aminat Yusuf (women leader), Zainab Adeyemi (youth leader), and Caroline Karounwi-Adebamiro (legal adviser).

Others are Moruf Ogunrinu (asst. organising secretary), Nurudeen Awolumate (vice chairman, West), Tajudeen Oyinloye (vice chairman, Central), and Segun Okutade (vice chairman, East), while Lateef Oki, Adeniji Dacosta and Hassan Shambakiu are ex officio.

Mr Williamson urged the newly elected executives to work diligently in promoting the values, ideals and programmes of the party across the state.

According to him, the congress, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, became necessary ahead of party primaries and the 2027 elections.

Mr Williamson advised the new executives to open the party’s doors to well-meaning Nigerians seeking a credible platform to contest the 2027 elections.

Speaking on behalf of the committee after taking the Oaths of Allegiance and Office, Ms Adeyemo, who thanked the party leaders and delegates for the privilege to lead the party, pledged not to dash their hopes ahead of 2027 general elections.

The chairman said Nigerians were yearning for leaders with credibility and capacity to improve their welfare, rather than focusing on party dominance.

Mr Adeyemo said the party had aspirants for various elective positions, including governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly seats.

“We have about 69 aspirants across different positions in Lagos state,” she said.

A PDP chieftain and member of the alliance, Adetokunbo Pearse, described the coalition with APM as a democratic strategy to provide Nigerians with an alternative platform. According to him, the alliance became necessary to strengthen opposition politics and challenge what he described as poor governance  of the ruling APC.

Mr Pearse said the coalition would mobilise supporters across political divides ahead of the 2027 elections in the state and across the country.
