Arrowhead Stadium set for 2026 FIFA World Cup spotlight

Opened over five decades ago, the GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is one of the most popular sports arenas in the United States. It primarily serves as the home ground for the National Football League franchise, the Kansas City Chiefs.
The stadium will host six of the 104 matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including four group-stage matches, one round-of-32 match, and one quarterfinal match.
The arena will be rechristened the Kansas City Stadium throughout the tournament, as per FIFA sponsorship regulations that prohibit the use of corporate names and branding not associated with the world’s football governing body.
Defending champions Argentina, Algeria, Ecuador, Tunisia, the Netherlands, Austria, and Curaçao are among the countries scheduled to play at the venue during the tournament.
Located in Kansas City, Missouri, construction of the 76,000-capacity stadium began in July 1968 and opened in August 1972. The project was estimated to have cost $43 million at that time, which is approximately $330 million in 2026.
The stadium has undergone several renovations since, including in 1991 and 1994. The last revamp was between 2007 and 2010, reportedly costing over $550 million at current rates, adjusted for inflation.
Unlike most of the other American arenas hosting matches during the World Cup, Arrowhead Stadium has a circular, open-air bowl design and features more than 100 premium seating and executive suites.
It is known for being one of the loudest stadiums in the world and once entered into the Guinness World Record when Kansas City Chiefs fans set the record for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium, reaching 142.2 decibels during a game in 2014.
Arrowhead Stadium sits right next to Kauffman Stadium, home of the Major League Baseball team, the Kansas City Royals, and together they form the Truman Sports Complex.
Between 1996 and 2007, the arena hosted home games of Major League Soccer side Kansas City Wizards, which has since been rebranded as Sporting Kansas City.
The arena doesn’t have a reputation as a popular destination for musicians to hold concerts, as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are two of the few artists who have toured the stadium during their Reputation Stadium Tour and Renaissance World Tour, respectively.
It currently stands as one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL still in use without being completely replaced, thanks to constant renovations that have kept the arena modern.
