The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says three persons died in a multiple accident on Sunday in Oba in Idemili North LGA in Anambra, along Owerri-Oraifite-Onitsha road.

Confirming the incident to journalists in Onitsha, the FRSC sector commander in Anambra, Adeoye Irelewuyi, said that the multiple accidents involved eight vehicles.

Mr Irelewuyi said it involved a commercial motorcycle without a registration number, three yellow tricycles without a registration number, and two Toyota Hiace commercial buses without a registration number.

He said other vehicles involved in the accident were a white Mack trailer without a registration number and a navy blue Toyota Camry without a registration number.

The commander attributed the probable cause of the fatal crash to a loss of control as a result of brake failure.

According to him, a witness said tax collectors were stopping tricycles from collecting taxes when the driver of the Mack truck failed to brake, lost control and rammed into the other vehicles.

“Fifteen people were involved in the crash, five persons injured, comprising three male and two female adults. Three persons were killed, comprising two males and one female child, and seven people were rescued unhurt.

“Passersby took casualties to the hospital before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team from RS5.36 Oraifite unit command, Anambra,” he said.

The sector commander noted that the scene was tense, with angry mobs, some carrying machetes, remonstrating against the revenue collectors.

He warned motorists to avoid disobeying traffic rules and regulations by servicing their vehicles to minimum safety standards before plying the road.
