Sutirtha’s victory over Yubin is another major upset in the women’s singles event after Egypt’s Badawy Farida, ranked 331 in the world, defeated Batra Manika.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon (WR 34), who thumped Nigeria’s Adegoke Muizz (WR 345) 3-0, will face India’s Thakkar Vikash Manav in the fourth quarter-final tie.
The 20-year-old remains the only African in the event, which has earned her the maximum support of fans in the arena.
The team up of Olajide and Solanke defeated the team of Amadi and Matthew 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-5, 6-11) in an all-Nigerian quarter-final tie.
Jonghoon and Yubin will face Thakkar and Kamath, while Chitale and Shah will lock horns with Xu and Luo, competing for spots in this year’s final.
In total, three Nigerians are in the Women’s Singles round of 16 compared to the Men’s Singles round of 16, with only one Nigerian, Adegoke Muizz.
Adegoke Muizz remains the only Nigerian player in the Men’s Singles event at the ongoing 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos.
