America’s Katie Ledecky has tied the record for the most gold medals won by a female Olympian after winning the women’s swimming 800m freestyle at the ongoing Paris Games on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, who had already won gold in the 1500m freestyle, silver medals in the 400m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle in the Paris Games, logged a time of 8:11.04 to clinch her latest gold.

She defeated Australian Ariarne Titmus (8:12.29) and American Paige Madden (8:13.00) took silver and bronze, respectively to match Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for the most all-time by a female Olympian.

Meanwhile, with her new achievement, Ledecky set a record for the most gold medals and overall medals (14) won by a woman in the swimming event in the history of the Olympic Games, putting her one gold ahead of compatriot Jenny Thompson.

Thompson has 12 Olympic medals in total, including eight gold, three silver and one bronze, while Australia’s Emma McKeon sits in third in the overall women’s swimming medal table with six gold, two silver and four bronze.

Saturday’s event brought to an end Ledecky’s incredible journey in France, and she will head back to the U.S. with two amazing gold medals and two silver medals in her trophy cabinet.
