Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe could not help as Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night to progress to the quarter-finals.

Having lost 1-0 to the Bavarians in the first leg of the round at the Parc des Princes, PSG only needed a goal to have any chance of progressing, but two goals in the second half ensured that Bayern secured another win.

PSG had the best chance to score in the first half when Yann Sommer, during the cusp of the half, was disposed inside his own box by Vitinha, who immediately shot the ball towards an empty net, but a last-gasp clearance by Matthijs de Ligt ensured the game stayed nil-nil.

In the 53rd minute, Bayern put the ball past the PSG goalkeeper through Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, but the goal did not stand.

Eight minutes later, Choupo-Moting found himself on the scoresheet.

In an attempt to redeem themselves, PSG began to mount pressure on their hosts’ half in search of an equaliser which could have changed the dimension of the encounter but later proved costly.

With a number of PSG players out on an attack, Bayern won the ball, with Joāo Cancelo and Serge Gnabry combining only three minutes into their introduction to seal the Bavarians’ victory thanks to a goal from the latter after a clean cut-through pass from the former in the 89th minute.

Bayern Munich have now advanced to the last eight on a 3-0 aggregate and maintained their perfect record in the competition, while it all ended in disappointment for the Parisians.

Meanwhile, Serie A giants AC Milan held Tottenham to a goalless draw at home in the other round of 16 fixture of the night to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 11 years.

Ten-man Tottenham could not overcome the one-goal deficit in the 1-0 defeat to the seven-time winners at San Siro two weeks ago, leaving AC Milan to join Chelsea, Benfica and Bayern Munich to have secured their place in the quarter-finals of this year’s Champions League.
