Belgian police have gunned down the man responsible for the fatal shooting of two Swedish nationals in Brussels, says the country’s interior minister.

On Tuesday morning, Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden announced on broadcaster VRT, shortly after federal prosecutors said that a suspect in the case had been shot.

Two Swedish citizens were shot dead and a third person injured earlier on Monday in what Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo called a terrorist attack.

The shooting occurred after thousands of Swedes arrived in Brussels for a football match. The Euro 2024 qualifying tie was abandoned at half-time, and spectators were evacuated.

In a press conference early on Tuesday, Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said the attacker was identified as a man of Tunisian origin living in the country illegally after his asylum claim was rejected.

The attack prompted the city to raise its threat level, including increased security measures in several sensitive locations, especially places connected to the Swedish community.
