Belgium has issued an online apology after the Royal Belgian Football Association posted a video of national team player Amadou Onana singing he would kick French star Kylian Mbappe ahead of their Euro 2024 last 16 match against France.

Onana was featured in a video involving comedian Pablo Andres who was singing “who will kick Mbappe’s shin?” to which the 22-year-old Everton midfielder responded with “Amadou Onana” as Belgium and France face off in a round of 16 game in Dusseldorf on Monday.

The video was not received well in France, generating wide media coverage. The federation has since taken down the video and subsequently issued an apology.

“It was not the intention to attack anyone,” Belgium’s spokesperson Stefan van Loock said before the team’s daily news conference started on Saturday.

“We have been working with comedian Pablo Andres for a long time, this video also had to be funny. But we misjudged that and also took the video offline,” he added.

“The video was intended to be humorous but has since been taken offline.”
