Bulgaria will send Soviet-built armoured transport vehicles in its first delivery of heavy military equipment to Ukraine since Russia invaded its neighbour in February 2022.

The government of the NATO and EU-country approved a corresponding agreement to be signed with Ukrainian officials in Sofia on Friday.

Bulgaria, a former member of the USSR-led Eastern Bloc, will donate the vehicles from the stocks of its Interior Ministry under the agreement.

This is the first time Bulgaria will donate such heavy equipment to Ukraine following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit in early July.

The new pro-Western government in Sofia had assured Ukraine of more military support than the previous transitional government provided.

President Rumen Radev, regarded as sympathetic to Russia and appointed an interim cabinet before a new election, had refused to allow arms and ammunition to be supplied to Ukraine.

The former fighter jet pilot and head of the air force sees no military solution to the more than 17-month-long conflict.
