German Bundesliga football club Cologne decided to place 220 cuddly toys around the pitch for Saturday’s game with Wolfsburg to symbolise the children killed in the invasion of Ukraine.

The toys were miniature versions of Cologne’s mascot, a goat named Hennes. “Every Hennes is symbolic of a child killed in the war in Ukraine,” a statement said.

The names of the children identified were also to feature on the stadium big screen.
