CAF Confederation Cup: Nigerian champions Rivers United handed favourable group stage draw

Sixteen teams would participate in the 2022/2023 edition of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Rivers United have been drawn against Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas and two other teams from top clubs from Central Africa for the group stage of CAF Confederation Cup.

The draws for both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup were made at a ceremony at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, in the early hours of Monday.

Sixteen teams would participate in the 2022/2023 edition of the CAF Confederation Cup, and were drawn into four groups consisting of four teams each.

Rivers United, the only Nigerian representative in this year’s competition, will face one-time Champions League, ASEC Mimosas, seven-time Congolese champions, Diables Noirs and DC Motema Pembe from DR Congo in Group B of the second tier CAF Inter-club competition.

It is the first time since 2018 that Nigeria will have a representative in either of the two CAF Inter-club competitions, as the Pride of Rivers now carry the mantle of increasing the continental ranking of the topflight Nigeria Professional Football League.

The draws in full:

GROUP A: USM Alger, Marumo Gallants FC, Al Akhdar SC, FC Saint Eloi Lupopo.

Group B: ASEC Mimosas, Diables Noirs, Rivers United FC, DC Motema Pembe.

GROUP C: Pyramids FC, Asko de Cara, Future FC, ASFAR Club.

GROUP D: TP Mazembe, US Monastir, Young Africans, AS Real de Bamako.
