The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, on Friday charged Nigerian youths to embrace unity, discipline and resilience as guiding values for nation-building.

Mr Musa, represented by AVM Nkem Aguyi, group managing director of Defence Holding Company Ltd, gave the charge while declaring the 2025 Abuja Military Barracks Youth Sports Championship closed.

He said that youths had reminded them that sports were not just about competition, but about character.

According to him, every sprint, every pass, and every cheer has shown that teamwork and camaraderie run deep within our barracks.

“It is in this spirit that we find the strength of our Armed Forces and indeed our nation,” he said.

He commended all the athletes, noting that whether or not they carried home trophies, they were all winners for showing courage, determination and discipline.

The CDS also acknowledged challenges facing young people, including insecurity and substance abuse.

He stressed that through positive engagement and mentorship, the armed forces would continue to support programmes that empower the youth and strengthen communities.

Speaking on behalf of the athletes, 15-year-old Nisi Michael thanked the CDS for his support to youth and sports development.

Mr Michael thanked parents, cantonment commanders, coaches and the organisers for their guidance and encouragement.

He said the championship had taught them discipline, teamwork and resilience that would remain with them beyond the field of play.

“Whether we carried a trophy or not, we are all champions,” he said.

The four-day championship brought together youths from military barracks across Abuja in a contest of skills and stamina, but more importantly, in a show of unity and brotherhood.

The athletes from the various military barracks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) competed in football, volleyball and basketball in both male and female categories.

Lungi Barracks emerged overall winners with gold in football (male category), basketball and volleyball in both male and female categories.
