“Tai Chi is crucial for older people as it offers numerous benefits, including improved balance, flexibility, and strength, which can help prevent falls and injuries and strengthen cardiovascular health.  A significant aspect of Tai Chi is its capacity to boost stability and suppleness, proving particularly advantageous as it improves balance and strength in people with Parkinson.

“Moreover, tai chi can reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression, the slow mindful breaths and movements have a positive effect on the nervous system and mood-regulating hormones

“Tai Chi is documented to alleviate stress, tension, and melancholy, the individuals who practised tai chi experienced significant improvements in their quality of sleep offering a holistic approach to mental wellness,’’ he said.

He said that in 2020, Tai Chi was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The practice of Tai Chi dates back to the mid-17th century in a small village called Chenjiagou in China’s Henan Province before spreading to over 150 countries and regions, attracting millions of practitioners.

“Whether embraced within a communal ambiance or practised individually in a peaceful setting, the gentle essence of Tai Chi continuously nurtures and restores individuals of various ages and backgrounds,” Mr Li said.
