Defending champion Shin Yubin in WTT Contender Lagos Women’s Singles round of 16 as three Nigerians make cut

In total, three Nigerians are in the Women’s Singles round of 16 compared to the Men’s Singles round of 16, with only one Nigerian, Adegoke Muizz.

Defending champion Shin Yubin of South Korea is through to the Women’s Singles round of 16 of the ongoing 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos after a comfortable win over India’s Kamath Archana Girish on Thursday.

The 19-year-old defeated Girish 3-0 (15-13, 11-7, 11-4) to reach the last 16, where the world number eight will hope to progress further when she faces China’s Yao Zixuan, who defeated Nigeria’s Rofiat Jimoh 3-0, for a place in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Another South Korean in the Women’s Singles round of 16 is Yoo Siwoo, who got an easy 3-0 win over China’s Sun Sinan in their round of 32 and will now face India’s Mukherjee Sutirtha, who defeated Ghana’s Borteye 3-0, for a spot in the last eight.

For the other Women’s Singles round of 16 ties, Nigeria’s Rabiu Aishat will face Akula Sreeja, Ghorpade Yashaswini tango Chitale Diya Parag in an all-Indian game, Nigeria’s Bello Fatimo will play India’s Mukherjee Ayhika.

Egypt’s Badawy Farida, who defeated Nigeria’s Hussain Halima in their round of 32 tie, will face India’s Batra Manika for a place in the quarter-finals. Manika got a comfortable 3-0 win over Nigeria’s Udoaka Hope to reach the last 16.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s Shao Jieni will face Nigeria’s Aminat Fashola, while China’s Ding Yijie, who defeated Ghana’s Borquaye 3-0, tango another Chinese Xu Huiyao, who pipped Egypt’s Dina Meshref 3-2.

In total, three Nigerians are in the Women’s Singles round of 16 compared to the Men’s Singles round of 16, with only one Nigerian, Adegoke Muizz.
