The Delta State government on Saturday in Asaba donated food and relief materials to at least 1,568 flood victims.

Making the donation through the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the government said the gesture was to complement the efforts of good-spirited individuals.

The commissioner in the ministry, Godfrey Enita, told the victims not to despair, but to remain positive for when the flood would recede for them to return to their homes.

“While it hurts for one to be away from his or her home, the flood would recede in no distant time and victims would return to their various homes,” he said.

Receiving the items, the commandant at the ministry’s Ogbeafor holding camp in Asaba, Daniel Okpor, thanked the commissioner for the gesture.

He said that catering to the needs of the 1,568 inmates at the camp was not easy and should not be left for the state government alone.

He appealed to well-meaning residents to join the donors list to give food items, clothing and toiletries to the flood victims.
