Delta Queens of Asaba on Saturday defeated Kada Queens of Kaduna 1-0 to win the women’s title of the 2022 Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) Super League.

The Delta Queens won the top place match to round off their competition at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

They scored in the sixth minute through Roselyn Ovukwo, while Kada Queens’ fightback in search of an equaliser through dangerous incursions into their opponents’ area ended in futility.

Speaking after the match, Ade Jacobs, the head coach of Delta Queens and Delta Force hockey teams, said he was proud of the women’s team for performing tremendously in this competition.

“We have continued to maintain our winning streak from day one till the last day. We lost one and won five matches for 15 points to lead the table,” he said.

Jacobs also praised the government of Delta for being there for them at all times through the tremendous support for the state teams at hockey tournaments.

“He has always been there for the team whenever we need him, supporting us morally, materially and financially, and this is the bedrock of what is needed to keep a team vibrant.

“We came and we have conquered and made the state proud by emerging winners in the women’s category and coming fourth in the men’s category.

“So, we appreciate our state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, for being very helpful in the development of sports in the state,” the coach said.

Meanwhile, in one of the other women’s classification matches played, Yobe Queens beat Plateau Queens 2-0 to finish third in place. The team also beat Benue Amazons 1-0 to take fifth place in the women’s category.

In the men’s classification matches played, Delta Force lost to Niger Flickers 0-3 to finish fourth and for Niger Flickers to take third place. While Stallions of Lagos beat Yobe Desert Rollers 3-2 to finish fifth.

A total of 15 teams participated in the Super League, with seven  teams in the women’s event and eight in the men’s competition.

The tournament served as an avenue to select the country’s representatives to the Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC), for both men’s and women’s hockey teams, slated to hold from February 3 to February 11, 2023.
