Governor Umaru Bago of Niger has pardoned 80 inmates in various correctional centres and approved the immediate payment of their fines to enable them to rejoin their families.

A statement by Abubakar Usman, secretary to the state government, in Minna on Monday said the gesture was to mark the 2023 Democracy Day.

Mr Usman said the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended the release of the 80 inmates based on old age, ill health and good behaviour.

He appealed to the inmates to use the opportunity to engage in useful ventures and shun any act that could lead them back to prison.

The SSG called on the state’s people to use the period to reflect on their roles in peace-building and support for good governance.

Mr Usman reassured that the government would ensure that dividends of democracy were felt in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

The SSG said the government was very concerned about the security challenges in the state and fully prepared to tackle the situation.
