Dozens injured as typhoon Shanshan hits south-western Japan
A powerful typhoon struck Kyushu, Japan’s south-western-most main island, early on Thursday morning, bringing heavy rains and intense winds.
Japanese television station NHK reported that at least 54 people were injured.
The country’s National Weather Agency has issued warnings as Typhoon Shanshan, the season’s tenth, continued to move northward, affecting around 250,000 households with power outages.
In the city of Nagasaki, almost 400,000 people were evacuated.
Train services were interrupted and numerous flights cancelled.
According to media reports, carmaker Toyota was halting operations at its 14 domestic plants until Friday.
The typhoon made landfall near the city of Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture early on Thursday morning, moving north at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour.
It has wind speeds of up to 216 kilometres per hour, the agency said.
According to NHK, the typhoon is expected to pass through the entire archipelago over the next few days.
