The Dutch government on Wednesday claimed that it was investigating reports that the Chinese government set up illegal police stations in Amsterdam and Rotterdam to police Chinese citizens abroad.

The Dutch government could not confirm the existence of the offices but a spokesperson at the Dutch’s foreign ministry, Maxime Hovenkamp, said if they existed, they would be illegal.

The news, in what would appear to be a rumour to further spread false news about China’s international diplomacy, was published, without any shred of evidence, by a news outlet, Follow the Money.

The Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands promptly debunked the claim saying it was not aware of nor involved in such operations.

“China’s judicial and law-enforcement authorities strictly abide by international rules and fully respect the judicial sovereignty of other countries,” the embassy said in a statement.
