At least 131 people have died due to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The DRC health minister, Samuel-Roger Kamba, confirmed in a broadcast on Monday that reported deaths are suspected to be linked to the outbreak.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was “deeply concerned about the scale and speed of the epidemic” ravaging DR Congo.

“Early on Sunday, I declared a public health emergency of international concern over an epidemic of Ebola disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda,” Mr Ghebreyesus told the World Health Assembly in Geneva.

The epidemic is ravaging Ituri province, a region bordering Uganda and South Sudan. The region experiences high population movement linked to mining activities.

WHO has scheduled an emergency committee meeting on Tuesday to address how to tackle the epidemic ravaging DR Congo.
