The Ebonyi Fire Service said it saved an old bush bar inside the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike, the medical students’ hostel in Abakaliki and other residential buildings from fire.

The fire service director, Raphael Ibiam, disclosed this on Thursday in Abakaliki.

Mr Ibiam explained that from an empty plot of land, the fire spread to the bush bar structure made with thatched roof.

He said that his team of firefighters quickly put out the fire.

He added that the team arrived at the hostel premises at Nna street in Abakaliki and acted promptly to prevent the fire from further escalating to other houses.

“The incident happened around 3:10 a.m., but we were able to manage the fire. Thank God, nothing was lost to the inferno, just the roof of the old structure. Till now, we have yet to ascertain the cause of the fire,” Mr Ibiam said.

He called on the public to avoid bush burning and use cutlasses and other tools to weed their surroundings.

“Please, always adhere to precautionary measures to prevent fire outbreaks. Also, residents, traders, petrol service stations, among other outlets, should keep a fire extinguisher to control fire outbreaks,” he stated.
