The administration of Godwin Obaseki on Friday directed the closure of the state-owned Kara Abattoir in Eyaen, Uhunmwode local government area of Edo.

During an unscheduled visit to the abattoir, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Stephen Idenhere, described the state of the place as an eyesore.

Mr Idehenre, who was furious with the management of the abattoir, directed that it should be sealed up immediately until the issues of poor handling were properly addressed.

Stating that the meat from the facility was unhealthy for consumption, the commissioner added that anyone who flouted the order would be arrested and prosecuted.

According to him, the ministry has written severally to the management of the abattoir, but alleged that they disregarded the warnings.

“We must stop this emerging epidemic; it is clear that the meat from this place is unfit for human consumption.

“We cannot tolerate this. They must understand that there is a government in the state.

“From today, this place can no longer operate, until it is in a better state,” he added.
