The Ekiti House of Assembly has summoned officials of the state sports council over the ‘embarrassment’ recently caused by the ‘shabby outfits’ worn by the athletes during the opening parade of the ongoing Asaba Sports Festival.

This is contained in a statement by the chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Babatunde Oke, on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti.

Mr Oke, who condemned, in strong terms, the embarrassment caused by the outfits, called on the officials overseeing sports to appear before the House Committee on Youth and Sport on September 26 at 2:00 p.m.

The statement further stated that the summon had become necessary to unravel the circumstances behind the athletes’ poor outfits.

While acknowledging the importance of sports outings to position the positive image of the state, he said the attire worn by the athletes did not reflect the values and standards upheld by Ekiti.

The assembly, therefore, directed the officials concerned to appear before its committee as a proactive measure to guard against future occurrence of the situation.

The assembly had recently passed the Ekiti State Sports Commission bill into law to promote and enhance sporting activities.
