The chairperson of Oye Local Government Area in Ekiti, Clara Bamisile, has appealed to landlords in the area to build decent and accessible toilets in their facilities to curb the menace of open defecation.

Ms Bamisile made the appeal during an interview with journalists in Oye-Ekiti on Saturday.

She explained that most tenants are always forced to indulge in open defecation in the nearest buses, slums, and uncompleted buildings due to the absence of befitting toiles in their apartments.

The chairperson advised landlords to desist from renting out houses without toilet facilities to tenants, saying that the council’s efforts toward curbing open defecation were still on course.

She urged parents to refrain from allowing their children to defecate in front of their houses, drains or roadside bushes within the community.

Ms Bamisile also advised nursing mothers to imbibe appropriate channels for disposing of baby nappies and other garbage.

According to her, open defecation could cause a cholera outbreak if residents do not adhere strictly to good hygiene and proper cleaning of their environment.

“I want to appeal to indigenes and residents of Oye -Ekiti and Oye Local Government Area who are landlords to ensure they have m toilet facilities for themselves and their tenants.

“Human waste being exposed in the open is not good for our health and should be discouraged not only by the landlords but other stakeholders in our communities.

“The state government has been trying its best by advocating and educating the citizens on the need to keep the environment clean at all times.

“I believe it is time to take action to curb unhealthy habits in own interest,” she said.

Ms Bamisile assured the residents of the administration’s determination toward bringing the dividends of democracy to their door steps through improved healthcare service delivery to every nooks and crannies of the council.
