The Chairman, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Gwagwalada and District Society, Musa Dala, has urged members to be research-oriented to enhance economic growth.

Mr Dala spoke at the 2023 Annual Dinner and Award ceremony of the society on Saturday at Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory.

He said members should be inquisitive, problem oriented and critical thinking towards issues that could hinder the growth of the Nigerian economy.

“Certainly there are things we need to look at, what do people think we should do and what actually are we expected to do? For instance; what is happening with the cash crunch in Nigeria, why is there no cash in circulation in the economy, have you done your research to tell the government the reasons for this challenge?

“We have to improve and be more visible to the economy, what is happening to the insurance sector, can we have a take and come out with a strategy to help the sector,” Mr Dala said.

He said that if there was not enough money in circulation, the economy would not grow hence the government should ensure adequate flow of money into the economy.

“For instance, this festive season, people are selling their cash crops, you have to increase the cash flow in the economy.

“Local people do not understand money transfer, so you have to push money to the rural areas, and this will create income and the economy will grow but if you stop it you’re killing the economy,” Mr Dala said.

He said a bad economy could kill a whole nation, hence the need for finance professionals to go into sectoral research and build capacity to advise the government for things to be done right.

On her part, the 2nd Deputy Vice President, ICAN, Mrs Qeensley Seghosime, said if things were done appropriately, corruption would be minimised in the country.

“If everything is done according to compliance to rules and laws, you will see that the level of corruption will be greatly minimised and chartered accountants have been championing that,” Ms Seghosime said.

Ms Seghosime was represented by a member of the ICAN governing council. Mrs Joy Esu.

On behalf of the awardees, the immediate past chairman,  Chimezie Ogu thanked the leadership of the institute for the awards.

According to Mr Ogu, it is an inspiration and encouragement to be awarded as a past chairman of the institute.

He said the award came at the right time and would spur them to do more towards the growth and sustainability of the district.

The National Treasurer, ICAN, Tobi Abiola, said that it was good to recognise hard work, and urged the awardees to do more.

Speaking on how corruption could be minimised, Mr Abiola said that ICAN uphold honesty and integrity, adding that with accountants, things would be done right.

Some members of the institute were given awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to society.
