Some civil servants in Enugu State have commended Governor Peter Mbah for paying them the promised N25,000 wage award in December.

On November 15, Mr Mbah announced cash transfers of between N10,000 and N25,000 to the state’s workers from December to April 2024 to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

Some workers who spoke with journalists on Wednesday said they were happy about the governor’s gesture.

“You can see we are happy, and because of this, we are excited to resume work after the Christmas holidays,’’ a civil servant said.

However, another civil servant who corroborated the earlier one noted that some civil servants had not received the largesse because of bank issues.

He also noted that many workers did not report to their duty posts on Wednesday because they were yet to return from their villages.

Another civil servant said the government ought to give two weeks’ holidays to celebrate Christmas so workers could return to work the following year with more zeal.

“We cannot just spend two days and return to work throughout the year. The government should do something about it.

“The current governor is emphasising productivity and not attendance, so we should be given enough time to rest and not be forced to sign the attendance register,’’ he said.
