Former Ajax and Netherlands international midfielder, Quincy Promes, has been sentenced to one and a half years imprisonment after being found guilty of stabbing his cousin.

On Monday, a guilty verdict was handed down by a judge of a Dutch court for the incident that occurred in July 2020 at a family party. He narrowly escaped attempted murder and manslaughter charges but bagged 18 months imprisonment and a fine of €7,000 in compensation to his victim for assault.

The 31-year-old who capped 50 times for the Netherlands national team had denied the allegations despite testimonies from two witnesses. However, the discovery of conversations on his phone nailed him as he was sentenced.

It was stated by the court that the sentence of Promes, who currently lives in Russia where he plays for Russian league giants, Spartak Moscow, would have been less severe had it been he attended court proceedings and showed any remorse.

Meanwhile, the former Sevilla player is eligible to appeal the judgement but it is still unclear if he will return to his home country to serve his sentence.

Promes’ criminal saga continues as he is expected to face charges later in the year for smuggling 1370 kg of cocaine and belonging to an organised crime syndicate.
