Ex-Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, has died at 61.

Reports stated that he passed away on Sunday during kidney stone surgery.

Mr Lamorde had flown his spouse to Egypt for medical attention, but discovered that he had kidney stones. He passed away in an Egyptian hospital while undergoing kidney stone surgery.

A source who spoke to The Nation newspaper on condition of anonymity said that Mr Lamarde’s corpse would be airlifted to Nigeria on Monday for burial in accordance with Islamic law

The source said, “He actually took his wife to Egypt for medical attention when he decided to remove a kidney stone which had caused him some discomfort.  He however died in the process of the procedure to remove the stone. His corpse will be brought to Nigeria on Monday for Janaza (Islamic burial). I think the Federal Government is assisting in the formalities to bring back his remains.”

The 61-year-old served as the EFCC chairman from November 2011 to 2015, after which he was replaced on November 9, with Mr Ibrahim Magu, during the Muhammadu Buhari tenure as President.

Meanwhile, Mr Lamarde’s profile on the EFCC’s website, showed that he was the third executive chairman of the commission. He was appointed in an acting capacity as chairman of the commission on November 3, 2011, following the removal of Farida Waziri by former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was subsequently confirmed as the third substantive chairman of the commission by the Senate on February 15, 2012.
