Super Falcons have advanced to the round of 16 in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup as Nigeria recorded her first World Cup clean sheet in a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland in their last Group B game on Monday.

The Irish ladies were the better team possession-wise, but the Falcons prevented the Republic of Ireland from scoring as both teams settled for a goalless draw.

Nigeria’s closest attempt on goal came in the 52nd minute as Uchenna Kanu’s header forced goalkeeper Courtney Brosman into a save, but the ball bounced off the latter’s hands to strike the crossbar for safety.

The Falcons finished second in Group B behind co-hosts Australia, who defeated Canada 4-0 in the other group match, to qualify for the World Cup knockout round for the third time in the country’s history.

Nigeria will face the winner of Group D, currently topped by reigning European champions, the Three Lionesses, in the next round while Australia tango runners up in the group, a position now being occupied by Denmark.
