Five persons have been confirmed dead, while ten others sustained various degrees of injuries in a multiple accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State sector command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Florence Okpe, confirmed this in a statement.

According to Mrs Okpe, the accident, which reportedly happened around 9:56 a.m., involved a Daf truck with number plate KUT561ZZ, a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GGE84YF, and another truck without a number plate.

Stating that the 15 people involved in the accident comprised 11 males and four females, Mrs Okpe attributed the fatal crash to reckless driving by the truck drivers.

The statement read, “The suspected cause of the crash was dangerous driving on the part of one of the trucks, which made a sudden U-turn without any indication to alert the truck behind, which led to the loss of control on both the truck and the bus.

“The injured victims were taken to Famobi Hospital, Mowe, in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the state, while the corpses were deposited at Idera Hospital morgue, Sagamu.

“It was a combined rescue operation of FRSC, Nigeria Police Force, and other sister agencies that were all on the ground managing the situation,” she added.

She said the state sector commander of FRSC, Anthony Uga, advised motorists against reckless driving, and warned that drivers involved in any accident that claims lives will be prosecuted to deter other recalcitrant drivers.
