The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps in Jigawa State has said about 100 families were displaced by flooding in Gantsa, headquarters of Buji Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesman, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, said this in a statement in Dutse on Tuesday that the families were displaced following the destruction of their homes by flood.

Mr Tijjani said that a heavy rainfall on Sunday caused extensive damage to about 100 houses in the town, forcing the families to vacate their homes.

“The affected households have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety, leaving their belongings in the water. The downpour has left many families homeless after causing significant damage to their homes. Preliminary reports indicate that the rains led to widespread flooding, which overwhelmed the community’s drainage systems,” he said.

He said that already, officials of the local government authority, security agencies and the State Emergency Management Agency had swung into action to support the people.

He stated, “Rescue operations are ongoing, and temporary shelters are being set-up in safer locations to accommodate the displaced persons. The NSCDC disaster management personnel have also been deployed to strategic locations to secure the property of the victims against theft.”

Mr Tijjani said no casualty had been recorded so far, saying, “We are still gathering information on the matter”

The spokesman said the NSCDC Commandant in the state, Muhammad Danjuma, was committed to the safety of the affected households.

He urged residents of the town to be more vigilant and conscious during the rainy season to reduce the effect of the flooding.

“Endeavour to stay informed about weather updates and obey every warning from the authorities to avoid further tragedies,” he said.
