Freiburg’s Eggestein plays with broken hand in win over Stuttgart

“He broke his hand. The ball hit his hand,” Streich, in his 400th competitive game in charge, said after his team’s 1-0 Bundesliga win on Saturday. “He continued to play.”

Freiburg midfielder Maximilian Eggestein played the final minutes of the regional derby at VfB Stuttgart with a broken hand, according to coach Christian Streich.

“He broke his hand. The ball hit his hand,” Streich, in his 400th competitive game in charge, said after his team’s 1-0 Bundesliga win on Saturday.

“He continued to play. He said the whole time the bones were rubbing together,” Streich added. “But that’s typical of Maxi. He doesn’t make a big fuss. He sits in the dressing room and says, ‘We won, coach, everything is OK’.”

Freiburg, who won thanks to Vincenzo Grifo’s 11th-minute goal, had already made five substitutions when Eggestein was hurt late on, so he was bandaged instead of coming off.
