The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will start a ‘Special Weekend Operation’ to check the increasing number of road crashes in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of the FRSC Command and Administration Strategies (CAS), Jonas Agwu, disclosed this during a meeting with unit commands on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr Agwu, who also met with outpost heads of operations in the six area councils of the territory, explained that the FRSC had discovered an increasing number of crashes at weekends.

He said this was due to many social activities during weekends, with some road users driving under the influence of alcohol. According to him, breathalysers will be deployed to check the level of alcoholic intake.

Mr Agwu appealed to the heads of operations at unit commands to be proactive in ensuring effective deployment of personnel to check the excesses of reckless drivers.

The FCT sector commander, Oga Ochi, urged the need for regular meetings among senior officers for effective traffic management in the territory.

Mr Ochi charged the heads of operations to be firm and carry out their responsibilities diligently to reduce road accidents and fatalities by 15 per cent this year.

The FCT head of operations, Adewale Ameen, added that the command would continue to develop initiatives for the free flow of traffic and the safety of lives and property in the territory.

Mr Ameen assured that the command would continue to work with other agencies, host communities and transport unions to address obstruction, one-way driving, overloading and other traffic offences.
