The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Taraba has warned tyre dealers against selling substandard or fake tyres to motorists in the state.

The sector commander, Selina Williams, gave the warning at a meeting with the representatives of tyre dealers in Jalingo on Friday.

Ms Williams briefed the dealers on the various road crashes in the state attributed to tyre bursts based on investigations.

“This meeting will also serve as a caution to all of you because the command will work in collaboration with other security agencies in a joint operation to rid Taraba of substandard tyres dealers,” the FRSC commander.

She added, “As dealers in tyres, you are considered stakeholders in road safety in the state and are supposed to key in fully into the command’s activities geared towards making Taraba free of substandard tyres. This will translate into reducing the rate of road crashes in the state.”

Ms Williams called on the dealers to register an association to enable the command to organise regular meetings and training for the dealers, vulcanisers and transport unions for better results.

Livinus Onyekere, the leader of the dealers, “Our major challenge is that we are yet to come under one umbrella body, where we can speak with one voice and check the activities of the dealers and also vulcanisers.”
