The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee on Thursday affirmed the elevation of 87 lawyers as senior advocates.

The promotions, which came after the panel’s 164th meeting chaired by Chief Justice Kayode Ariwoola in Abuja, marked the end of this year’s rigorous exercise for certifying lawyers to the top bar.

The new senior advocates will be sworn in at a ceremony on September 30, 2024, the panel announced in a circular shared with Peoples Gazette Thursday evening.

Oluwole Afolabi, a U.S.-based Nigerian lawyer with offices in Abuja and the New York metro area, has represented President Bola Tinubu in Nigeria and abroad, including many of his cases in Chicago and Washington D.C. Lateef Karim and Nnodim Duru were also among those confirmed as SANs today.

The panel said five petitions were received against some of the applicants this year, all of which were found to be meritless and subsequently dismissed by the disciplinary panel that perused the ethical and professional standing of all the 87 new senior lawyers.
