Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on Monday criticised Western countries ‘double standards’ regarding the Gaza conflict.

“The Global North is suddenly silent, witnessing crimes against humanity,” said Ms Marsudi in her ministry’s annual speech in the historic Merdeka Building in Bandung, where in 1955, dozens of countries pledged to reject colonialism and promote world peace.

She added, “Where are all the lectures that they often give about human rights? Don’t Palestinians have the same rights as the rest of us?”

Ms Marsudi referred to 2023 as the worst year for Palestinians, citing more than 21,000 fatalities in Gaza due to attacks by Israel, 70 per cent of whom were children and women.

She emphasised Indonesia’s continuous support for the cause of the Palestinians.
